Invictus, books, coffee n' notes

Time flies when you’re plundering history.

Farway Gaius McCarthy was born outside of time. The son of a time-traveling Recorder from 2354 AD and a gladiator living in Rome in 95 AD, Far’s birth defies the laws of nature. Exploring history himself is all he’s ever wanted, and after failing his final time-traveling exam, Far takes a position commanding a ship with a crew of his friends as part of a black market operation to steal valuables from the past.

But during a heist on the sinking Titanic, Far meets a mysterious girl who always seems to be one step ahead of him. Armed with knowledge that will bring Far’s very existence into question, she will lead Far and his team on a race through time to discover a frightening truth: History is not as steady as it seems.

5 Stars

This is my first read of Ryan Graudin and I loved it. Usually, I don’t like read different POVs but here Ryan did an amazing job and it was very satisfying.

I love how the author implements the time travel here and from the start with the heist, I was deep in the story and I finished it in one sitting…Well in two, lol. This story reminds me a lot of Firefly, Timeless, and Doctor Who all jumbled up together, and it worked. The time travel makes everything feel better here and the plot moves faster. The author paints wonderful images of the time travel, that you just can’t fall deeper into the story.

The plot itself is very gripping and you just find yourself at 2am still reading 😀 I loved the jumps through history and the none stop excitement and adventures. This is definitely a more plot-driven story than a character-driven, but it was still a wonderful read. Even the romance here was written beautifully and didn’t take the spotlight from the plot or other characters.

The characters were very well made, even though I did want more information on a few characters. It felt as if something was missing (it didn’t make the story less great).

Far – I loved how the author made this unusual character as the lead character, but I think we could’ve gotten more details and more of his story here. It felt a bit like something missing and it was hard for me to relate to Far.

Gram – Is the Engineer of the Invictus. I loved reading more about him, lol. He is so smart and logical – I guess that’s what made me relate to him more 😀

Eliot – The mysterious girl character, was such a wonderful addition to the other characters and even though I was very suspicious of her from the start, she is still an important part of the plot.

Priya – Is Far’s girlfriend from the start and it was written beautifully which made the story relatable. This relationship reminded me a lot of  Zoe and Wash from Firefly, lol. and maybe my favorite of the characters

Imogen – Far’s cousin. I loved her quirky style and her unique hairstyles and I really enjoyed reading more about her.

From the middle of the book, things get clearer and more adventurous, but what I loved here best is that the middle of the book just made me read faster, I was so invested in the plot and the characters and I obsessed in knowing more and more.

By the end I was so sad it was over…

Overall, Invictus was a very gripping, fast paced, action packed story and I highly recommend this book to you all ❤

I Won NaNoWriMo (Woo-Hoo)

Hello to all my wonderful readers,

I am so happy and feeling on the top of the world right now… I Wrote 7,584 words today and my total words is 50,84 words (I am so happy, that I had to share, lol) 😀 ❤

I won NaNoWriMo (OMG).

The moment I went over the 50K I kept writing, but with so many screaming, lol, of Yay and Omgosh (for real) and tons of happy tears (I’m crazy… I know, but I don’t care).

As soon as I validated the word count and I saw that I got the certificate and the wonderful song they’ve made for us, that felt sooo amazing (and I’m still high on that feeling, lol). I kept writing just until I hit the 10K again, lol so now my total is 52,500 words (had to finish a few things).

This NaNoWriMo was harder than I remembered ever being before. I wrote almost 30K in 3 days, lol, which was insane or me, but that was the only time I had for myself to just write. I’ve learned so much about myself, my writing but most importantly, about what I can do in just a few hours of being alone with my Rainy Mood and my laptop (LOL) ❤

With all that is happening in my life right now, I really couldn’t believe that I will win this year, but I did it (I am so happy) 😀

If you are still writing on the race to win Nano, go and write!

Here are a few tips from what I’ve learned this year

  • Don’t think, just write! This is not the novel you will send out, lol. This Novel can be rubbish with tons of great potential, so don’t think of how it is right now and just keep on writing.
  • Write anywhere. I mean it, anywhere. In the car, the tube, the bus. While you wait for something or someone. On the laptop, with pen and paper, on the phone. Anywhere and with anything, as long as you write 😀
  • Push yourself as much as you can to write faster and faster. You can rest and sleep after it’s all done 😉

About the resting part, well… Sadly for me, I don’t have much time to rest, lol. In just a few hours, tomorrow will become a new month and with it comes so many things: Hubby’s Birthday ❤ Start Wars ❤ Book Reviews ❤ Lots of appointments to go with my mom (Busy Bee) and… I need to keep on writing and start my content editing as well (Yay me) 😀

How is your Nano? Are you far behind or close to the finish line? Did you win this year’s NaNoWriMo? What are your plans after NaNoWriMo? Can’t wait to read your thoughts and plans ❤

Remember that even if you are behind, you can still win… Just write those words… fast! Even if you know you can’t win, keep writing, something amazing can come out of it. If you won… Congrats, that is so awesome 😀

As always, thank you so much for reading ❤

Friday Musing

It’s Friday, yay and here at Coffee n’ Notes it’s time for Friday Musing 🙂

This week had a weird combination of an easy and busy week, lol, a very weird combination but that’s how it felt :D. My fridge shelf, that broke over 2 months ago, is really hard to replace, lol, they keep sending the wrong part (annoying, but we keep waiting).

My mom is doing okay, but we had a few hard days, but she is getting better and stronger ❤ I saw her walk today for a few minutes and it was amazing. I could barely hold myself from crying (a proud cry and a happy cry).

Along with the busy days and excitement about my mom and the new game expansion of gw2 (Heart Of Thorns), I haven’t noticed that Nano is only 2 days away (OMG!). Life is so crazy and soon it will be even crazier, lol. I am so excited about this Nano and I do hope to win this year 😀

My major ‘Musing’ for this week, hmm… I have to say it is the near event of NaNoWriMo but also going out with my mom shopping. You see… Going shopping with my mom is very rare and to sit down with her and shop till we drop was so nice and even I didn’t realize just how much I missed it ❤

NaNoWriMo is creeping up on me fast, building both fear and excitement in me. Now, even though I had already prepared myself with an outline of my second book: New Earth in The Earth Legacy Series, new stories pop up flooding my thoughts and dreams with new stories and new characters, jumping all around me craving for their spotlight to shine through.

And… It’s Halloween! How cool is that? Here we do not celebrate Halloween, but hubby and I feel it in the game with the many costumes and amazing mini-games 😀 I will Instagram about that throughout the weekend 🙂

I hope wherever you are, you are having nothing but fun and enjoy your time with your loved ones and stay tuned for tomorrow at Coffee n’ Notes 😉

As always, thank you so much for reading ❤

The plot of the story (The Fifth House) continues about a month after the first book (The Only City Left) has ended. I can’t even begin to say how much I loved this book. I think giving it only 5 stars is just not enough. Though it’s the second book and usually this is where author fall, it wasn’t the case with this book. This book has just made the story even better and more exciting. I read this book twice, the first time I devoured it completely, but on the second reading I took notice of the details 🙂

I had high expectations from this book as…

Book Update

If you missed my post about my book update I had done before, you can click here.

I keep pushing this post further down my draft folder (don’t know why), but I thought it was time to write this post, as I do have lots of changes and I did tons of work.

Word count so far: 60,000 words, give or take a few (not counting yesterday and today). I love to round up my writing, no real reason to do so, but I like it.

Pages: 250 pages.

OK! Let’s dive into the book (a bit):

I promise to keep this short 🙂

As I said in my first my post (link under the picture), my book is set in a futuristic world very similar to ours. It’s a cross of Science Fiction, Dystopian and a bit of romance.

I am now at a point in my story where my Hero has had his Fun & Games (It’s a beat from save the cat) and is now deep in the Midpoint beat.

At this point, Jack (my main character) is tormented by many imaginary and real sights while fighting to breathe due to the lack of good breathable air. This pushes him close to death, without him even knowing why. Without getting into specifics, that I can’t write here (sorry), I can say that this takes its toll on him and from here on out there is a very visible transformation that occurs.

Here Jack will feel a lot of anger, loss, and confusion, but that’s ok. This will help him grow as a person and gain the strength he needs in order to fight his enemies (in Act 3).

Because there are two major plots in this story, that are running alongside each other throughout the story, there are a few bad guys here, but there is that one guy who makes the leap and becomes more horrible and motivated than the others.

In this midpoint of the story, Jack will soon find new friends while trying to find his old ones.

The bit of romance (<3) I have in my story will start to unfold, and Jack will struggle with it, a lot!

I love writing this story…

I love how the story keeps me more excited about what comes next. I know it sounds funny as I am the storyteller, but there are some details that I don’t know, even though I have outlined my story, sometimes my characters do surprise me and the story goes on a side road for a bit. I love it when it happens because this way I get to know more about my characters and their world through their eyes and their appearance.

I had a few struggles with the story…

At first, I had a bit of a struggle combining the major plot lines together smoothly.

At first, I had like 2 stories, lol, that should work together, but they didn’t. It took me awhile to understand where is the right line to mash them together.

Now, my major struggle is showing my antagonist (villain) the way I see him in my head. So to solve that I am building him from the ground up, lol, I’ve created a folder that is just about him 😀 There in notes, I put all the details I can think of so I will know him as I know myself.

I don’t know if this sounds crazy or not, but it helps me a lot.

If you have any suggestions for a great antagonist, please share them in the comments, I would love to know your thoughts on this 🙂

As always, thank you so much for reading ❤

Book Update

After a few of you asked me for more details on my current book I am writing, I thought it was best to give you a little update. I decided to make this Book Update as part of a series and I will post a short update every 2 weeks, so slowly you will get more details about my book (hope you will like it).

This book has come a long way from a small NaNoWriMo project (and a new Sci-Fi genre for me) to a real book that I love so much, it was like having a ‘Eureka’ moment, lol. I am now at a climax point in my story. My hero just reached the point of no return, where my hero will have to battle against his own friends and a bad guy in order to survive and save “the world”.

So let’s get into it!

My book is set in a world similar to ours, with a few changes (changes I’ve made so it would fit better to the world I’ve envisioned). It’s a cross of Science Fiction, Dystopian and a bit of love.

From the beginning, this book has two major plots running simultaneously. My protagonist and his friends spent most of their time trying to defend themselves or to escape, while my hero finds out about his special abilities that someday will help him save “the world”.

When I’ve initially planned this novel out, I had a bit of a hard time outlining all the details for such an action-packed novel, but slowly the details settled in nicely and I could see a better picture of both plots and all the subplots that affect Jack (my hero) in his journey.

Jack has a big goal in mind, which will be far beyond his own survival. He was forced into a situation he didn’t expect and even tried to get out off, until he knew there is no other way except to fight his way out of death and even save as many people, in need, as he can.

Without getting into too many specifics, let’s just say that my main character (and his friends) will be running from death a lot while trying to save themselves and others while trying to stop the law organization that kills hundreds of people in the name of freedom and future survival.

Bit by bit Jack will learn more about his abilities and how he got them, he will seek the help of the scientists who started this project.

Will he get there in time? Are they even still living? Can he really stop the big law organization?

That’s it for now. I really have to stop here before I reveal too much, at least until the next update 😉

Thank you so much for reading ❤
