My NaNoWriMo Prep 2017

NaNoWriMo2017

Happy Sunday to you all, I hope you are all resting and recharging your energies for the week to come 🙂

For those of you who don’t know what NaNoWriMo is, it’s a National Novel Writing Month (which takes place every year in November), where a bunch of people all around the world tries to write a novel of 50K words in 30 days. Nano is only 10 more days away (according to my sidebar counter hehe) and with the huge holiday we had here, and my mom’s doctor appointments, this month will fly by even faster.

This will be my 9th or 10th year of doing NaNo and even though I had to quit last year due to my mom’s health issues, I do hope that this year I will be able to finish.

I did make some great tips and NaNo prep a while back, and you can find them here and here. But this year I really wanted to share with you what I am doing these last days and how I prepare myself for NaNo (even with a busy schedule).

NaNoWriMo

So here are the main things I do to prepare myself for NaNo

Writing an outline

If you don’t have any idea what to write, just brainstorm ideas and pick one that you liked the most 🙂

For me, I know what I am writing… So I am doing a full detailed outline, as detailed as possible. I guess that this outline will be around 30-40 pages, lol. I have already started today, so I have 10 days to finish my outline and prepare everything else I might need.

Cleaning and organizing my space

My desk tends to get messy, a lot and very fast, lol. So I am going to clean my entire space, which is our spare room where I have my desk, our washer and dryer, our closets, printer and a few more bits here and there. So, I need to reorganize it and clean it. Making sure I have an inviting space to write in.

Writing a few pages

In a few days, I will start writing just a few pages, this way I will have a good place to start from and I won’t get overwhelmed. It really helps me see my project better and what I want to write, so when NaNo starts I am not stuck and can immediately continue writing. It’s just helping me not fall into the writer’s block trap 😀

Picking up a nice notebook, pens, and even an app

Usually, before NaNo starts, I pick a good notebook and my favorite pens and I take them with me everywhere in my bag. However, due to a busy schedule with my mom, I learned to use my phone for writing – a lot.

I love to clear out some space on my phone’s screen that only has my writing app and a timer (or the widgets) and I choose that screen as my home screen. This helps me to see my writing all the time on my phone and keeps me motivated to write and not get stuck.

Embrace the madness!

I starting to accumulate lots Coffee, candy, tea, water and healthy (and unhealthy) snacks 😀

I loved sharing with you how I prepare for NaNo and I hope it helped in any way 🙂 If you enter NaNo, how do you prepare for that? Share with us what are you going to do, in order to prepare yourself for NaNoWriMo 🙂

Thank you so much for reading and don’t forget to add me as a NaNo buddy ❤

Random Ramblings (wow it’s been a while)

Hello, everyone and happy Thursday to you all ❤ For me it means that weekend has almost arrived, lol. How was your week so far? Mine was busy and tomorrow is going to be very busy with writing, cooking, and lot of gaming 😀

It’s been awhile since I blogged… Really blogged, put down thoughts and share them with you all and I don’t include the book reviews or guest post I’ve done. I missed you all so much and I really wanted to update you on a few things that are going on in my life, both personal and work-related.

Things are somewhat calmer these days, though we have a few doctors appointments and check-ups to do in the upcoming months. My mom is feeling a bit better, but she is still very tired. I know that soon she will find her balance and start to feel tons better, maybe as winter will come (hopefully).

My husband started school (jumping up and down, lol, yay), wish him tons of luck everybody ❤ I am so proud of him for going to school again after so many years, I love his ambition to work harder for a better life for our family.

While my husband will be at school, he will also take our car 3 times a week… So, I will have more time to write and edit and finally finish some of our home projects, as I will stay at home those days (unless I will have an emergency, which I hope I will never have).

I have a few things I want to finish so I thought I would do a brainstorming and share these with you.

I have changed my newsletter from quarterly to bi-monthly so I will send to everyone that signed up to my newsletter every two months (for now).

I also have a few home projects to finish. Now that I will have a bit more time on my hands (hopefully), I will have more time to work on my house projects and finally finish some of them.

I started (finally) taking a few small steps into the writing career. But I hope to put this on the top of my daily list so that I can push my goals a bit forward. I really want to finish editing my projects. So I have still tons to do, hehe 🙂

One of my goals is to get back into blogging, but for now, I will only blog once a week (for now). I miss you all and I miss our talks in the comment section and most of all I just miss blogging and sharing with you, my days and my thoughts.

After I’m finished with my last review, I plan to take a break from doing book-reviews for a few months (maybe until the start of the new year). It’s not because I do not enjoy the books I’m reading or reviewing them but I really need to focus on my own writing and editing. Now that my mom is feeling a bit better (knocking on wood three times, lol), I know it’s the right time to focus harder on my writing and finish a few projects I started and start run with them.

Well, that is all from now. It’s so nice to share with you what is going on and just some random thought I’m thinking out 😀 Feel free to share your own upcoming projects and goals you want to finish (maybe this will the wish you put out there and start working on it) 😉

As always, thank you so much for reading ❤

Book Review: The Shackled Scribes by Lars Teeney

Author: Lars Teeney
Publisher: Xcism Press; 1 edition (September 20, 2016)
Publication Date: September 20, 2016
Genre: Fantasy
Pages: 158 Pages

The Shackled Scribes, Lars Teeny, Coffee n' Notes

Blurb

Futharkia is a city built upon the layout of an ancient rune shape, and a foundation of slavery. The Broxanians have been enslaved by the Olgoikhorkian Masters to exploit the Broxanian talent for rune-scribing. In exchange, the rune-scribes are compensated with the sweet, golden liquid, Ichor, that the giant worm-like Olgoikhorkians secrete from their glands. The Ichor also happens to be highly addictive and psychoactive. The system has worked for millennia.

However, the Great Fern Jungle that surrounds Futharkia is dying, being bleached white by some unseen force. Coupled with the fact that the simian-like Fern Lice have been hunted to near extinction to provide for Futharkia’s ever-increasing demand for food, Futharkia’s ecosystem is near collapse. It is amid this setting that Cyesko Limariar, an aging rune-scribe makes one last attempt at greatness to lift himself out of poverty, even if by fraudulent means.

Lars did an excellent job writing this book. It is a wonderful fantasy world that you wish you would live there, even with all its weirdness. My main genre of reading is Fantasy so I was thrilled when Lars gave me an ebook of The Shackled Scribe.

Both the writing style and the plot itself was written with great thought, and I truly enjoyed myself every minute of reading this book. Even before you read the story you see the gorgeous cover that lures you in, the blurb is written in such an enticing way that builds up the story and sucks you inside. From the very first page, I knew I would love this book and I did.

This fantasy world takes place in a world that is powered by runes. The storyline Lars built here is amazing. It’s a Fantasy world mixed beautifully with dystopian elements in it, all together weaving a dark and weird place, that lets your mind run free with his great images. Every once in awhile, I called out loud “Wow” and “No way”, I loved it.

The characters were built so realistically and they did a great work with moving me through the pages. Lars built solid characters, even though the naming of some was a bit too hard to pronounce, but they were still fun to follow.

Cyesko is such a unique character and all he wants is to be a well known and honored rune scribe. we follow his addiction to this golden drink he received as payment for his work.

Tialina is a very gifted and strong rune scribe. Together they are stronger and they make a very powerful rune, that soon enough brings a lot of trouble with it.

I think the characters in this book are so strong and smart that they change the entire world around them. These characters really move the plot forward and make the world they live in, even more, real to the reader.

Lars did a magnificent job in weaving this world and the characters in it, to make it a very fast paced read and an addictive story, that you will never forget (trust me).

I loved the use of dystopian elements in this world, it made the story a better read and making the story flow smoother and faster. Before you know it, the story has ended. This is a fantasy with everything it, but with a dystopian twist to it. There are creatures like imps, bird-like people, worms and more. Making the adventure you take even better and more weird/exciting.

Overall, I think the story is a must to read. The ideas, the images and the creativity all make the book a perfect weird read. This is a unique fantasy world with even more unique characters and I can’t wait to see more adventures in this world. My only wish was that this book would be longer ;))

The author gave me a free ebook of his Fantasy book, for a free and honest review. If you want to give this book a read, it’s free on Amazon (right now), so hurry up and grab it while you can.

Wow. This is Heena Rathore’s debut novel, but you would never think that when you read her book. She wrote Deceived so masterfully.

I know Heena for more than 2 years now, she became a wonderful friend and a kind person to know. If you don’t know who she is, go give her a visit. But now that she is about to publish her first novel, I was even more thrilled to read her book and I am so happy I did. I may not read a lot of Thriller books, but this book was amazing and scary to read.

Once the book arrived in my mailbox I was so happy to see this gorgeous cover, it made the book even more chilling and scary. I must say that my expectations for this book were met and even went beyond them.

I loved the Forward by Patrick H. Moore, a crime blogger and a writer, which clarified the difference between psychopath and sociopath. I think it was a great idea because a lot of people get confused by these terms and usually think they are the same.

This book has a very wonderful feel of Stephen King combined with Neil Gaiman to it, a beautiful mix of creepy/scary and Psychological elements. This book is dark, emotional and scary in a way that chills you to the bone.

I usually don’t like it when the POV changes, but Heena did it masterfully and it made the story flow better and even made it more enjoyable, also reading the events from the killer’s POV made it feel even scarier and twisted.

I found myself guessing who the killer is, and although I guessed right it was still a guessing game right up until the end.

Characters

Ally (Allison Stone) is the main character the story, nine years ago her mom and 5-year-old brother were murdered and she never been able to move on with her life, making things worse is her nightmares filled nights also she is being stalked by someone but won’t get any help. I really connected with Ally as she is a writer as well and loves to read a lot, but I also connected with her pain and anxiety.

Max, Ally’s dog. I would say that I love dogs a lot (a lot!) but there was a very scary part in the book about Ally’s dog Max, Thank you Heena for that mini heart attack and the tears 😀

Sam, Ally’s roommate. She is such a wonderful addition to Ally’s life and to the story.

Steve is Ally’s cousin and a journalist. His main goal is to find out the killer of Ally’s family, however, he is my least favorite character, I just couldn’t connect with him.

Danny, Ally’s boyfriend. After moving in with Danny she realized he is not the guy she thought he was.

Elizabeth the 13-year-old girl (her story is set in 1978), wow she was chilling and that story really was creepy.

The killer (which I’ll leave you to figure out who he is by yourself), was very well crafted to a very scary point.

The journal entries in the story add so much to the story, well-done Heena for writing this so masterfully, they flow and seem so real at the same time and they have a huge part in understanding who is the killer, these journal entries give us hidden bits of information.

This book is a page-turner and you will not get bored – I promise you.
Both the gorgeous cover and the story delivered on the premise of the book of leaving you by the end feeling scared and chilled by the possibilities.

As you get closer to the end, the story becomes more violent and chilling that while I was alone I read it with all the lights on, locked the door and constantly watched all the windows for any movement. There are a few big warning signs that Ally ignored and I just wanted to shake her vigorously, resulting in me shaking the book a lot, lol.

The ending is so good, but I won’t tell you more about that, I will, however, say that it was written extremely well, it was horrifying and came so quickly that I was shocked (still am).

Not all is perfect and I will say one thing that was a bit confusing to me, the names of some of the characters in the book are too similar.

To sum up everything

This book can easily be a movie thriller – easily. Everything is so well written and detailed, even the brutality was a stage to move the story and characters to where they needed to be by the end of the book.

The story, the characters and the writing all leave you wanting more and you won’t let the book down.

The cover is chilling and amazing. I know I already said this, but I had to say it again, lol.

I recommend this to everyone who likes thrillers, phycological story, mystery, and crime. But I also think that even if you don’t read much of this genre (like me), you should still give this a read, you’ll love it.

(Sorry for the long review, I guess I had lots to say, lol)

Book Review: Something Needs Bleeding By Christopher Long

Author: Christopher Long
Type: PDF
Genre: Horror
Pages: 318 pages
Published September 28th, 2015 by Kensington Gore Publishing

Book Review, Something Needs Bleeding, Coffee n' Notes

Blurb

Kensington Gore is a man on a mission. He always aims to give his readers something fresh from the world of horror. Only this time he is offering you something a little different. This time he is offering you a piece of horror history to call your very own. Collected in this volume are the final works of one of the great unsung heroes of horror, Thomas Singer. Singer was a man who truly knew how to terrify his readers with his strange, nightmarish tales. Sadly, though, he never received the acclaim in life he so rightly deserved.

Following the mysterious death of the reclusive writer earlier this year, Kensington Gore Publishing author Christopher Long was invited to help edit Singer’s final five bone-chilling tales and introduce them to the world. There are many rumors and theories about what secrets these stories may hold. Singer himself selected them from his extensive back catalogue and held them back to be released only after his death. So read Something Needs Bleeding if you dare. See what you can find hidden in the final pages Thomas Singer had to offer the world. Just be careful you don’t come away with blood all over you.

Review

4 Starts

I received a pdf copy of this book from the publicist for an honest review, and as always it will be spoilers free. I’m not used to reading from a pdf file and it made the reading a bit harder for me, as I read the book only on my phone.

Something Needs Bleeding is a collection of short stories. For me, this was a bit hard to get into at first, but when I kept reading, I was hooked because of Christopher Long’s writing style. Horror in most cases isn’t much my reading style, but I did enjoy this book a lot.

I enjoyed the intros as it gave us a glimpse of the horror writer, Thomas Singer, and his life, but they were a bit too long for my taste. The intros give us the origin story behind the characters and the events in his life and in the stories themselves. Once I got started reading the story itself, I was hooked and the writing style even got better as I kept reading.

The point of view here is in first person, which made me get into the story faster, this made the entire mystery and horror, even better and more chilling. The stories are very creepy (but without the gore), gripping and fast to read, I loved the story with the kids (Devil’s Hunch) a lot as it was the most detailed and the pace was fast. It was also very surprising with lots of twists you won’t see them coming and very enjoyable. There were so many things I didn’t see coming, lol, I loved it.

I loved the author’s writing style and imagery so much. The stories are well thought of and you could see and feel everything through his words, and the way he wrote the details was amazing for me and really made me get into the story even more.

There are many twists in this collection, the ending always surprised me and I never saw it coming. I had a few times where I was sure the story is going somewhere else and then you realize you are reading a horror story and everything changes fast, in a way I didn’t think it would.

I love the cover a lot, it brings out the perfect theme of the book.

If you like a good gripping and creepy story this is a must read for you.

“Each and every noise bled through the walls and floors of his room” Love this line so much 🙂

As always, thank you so much for reading ❤

Monthly Goals (And an Update)

Hello everyone,  I hope you are all having wonderful Thursday ♡

For this update, I thought I’d share with you some things I thought about and already started working towards them. March is about to become a very hectic month. My mom will still be at the hospital for most of March, then we need to see if she’ll go back to the home she was or somewhere else. I have a few things to do for myself as well and I want to push my writing and editing even harder. So, next month I have a few doctors appointments to go to and probably on April I will undergo Hysteroscopy and I hope all will be okay.

My mom is doing okay. It’s hard, can’t say it isn’t hard and now that she entered her 5th week of Radiations and Chemotherapy, It’s getting even harder. But other than that, mom is doing good and she’s trying to keep herself busy.

I don’t know if I ever told you this but 2016 was a very busy year for me in writing. I finished writing 3 full books. They’re finished with their first draft and second drafts (#1 is about: 115K, #2 is about: 80K #3 is about: 80K and I also wrote four more but just as ideas (10K-20K each). I think writing has become very easy to do on my phone and it helps me a lot, with all the hectic weeks I’m having, lol. However, the editing part is so hard for me to do on my phone or even on my tablet, but slowly I’ll get better at that 😀

divider

I had a lot of time to think these past few weeks and by the end of 2017, I want to accomplish a few things. I wrote a few quarterly goals, but I broke them down into monthly goals as well.

So here are my monthly goals for March 🙂

1. Edit 2-4 chapters.
2. Write 2-4 chapters.
3. Blog 1-2 week, even if just to say hello (missed you guys a lot).
4. Be more active in my social media.
5. Research on marketing more.
6. Research on publishers and agents.
7. Keep eating healthy and drink more water.
8. Journal more, even if it’s in my bullet journal.
9. On weekends, organize the house a bit more.
10. Read at least 1 book.

What are your goals for March? And how is your 2017 so far?

As always, thank you so much for reading ❤

My 4 NaNoWriMo Tips

NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) has started (yay) and what made this even more special, rain has finally arrived. Rain is here

Brainstorm

Take a bit of time to just brainstorm your idea. Write how you see the story starts and how it might end. Knowing how it will end, will help you when you get a bit stuck (this mostly happen, somewhere in the middle of the month). After you have the beginning and end, throw some adventure on the hero’s way 😀 This is by far my favorite thing to do besides the writing itself of course, lol.

Silence your editor

Yes, we all know this one and it’s hard not to stop and edit that word, or that annoying scene. But don’t! Leave your wonderful editor aside and remember, now you just write, nothing more. Just write.

Write in short bursts

Most nanowrimos can tell you that writing in short burst of 15-25 minutes, can truly help you write faster and just put you the right mood for writing. There’s nothing else in the world but your writing in those 15-25 minutes. Here you can use nano words sprints on Twitter, use an app like the Pomodoro or just put a timer on. This just makes things more manageable and less overbearing.

Community

Nano is not just a sprint to the finish line, it’s also lots of fun. There is so much power in the Nano community, that I urge you to look on Their site for some buddy friends, on twitter and all the social media, you are following. I love the Nano community so much ❤

floral

Enjoy this time, get inspired and have fun with your writing.

That’s all for now and I will keep writing and update throughout NaNoWriMo. I will not be doing nano every day, but I still hope to achieve the 50K goal. I did put in my planner some writing day, as I call them. So far today my word count is 3K of writing and 4 pages of edit 😀 I guess it’s ok for now, lol.

How was your first day of Nano?

As always thank you so much for reading ❤

Random Ramblings

RandomRamblings

Hello everyone, happy Monday to you all 🙂

Omg, where do I begin?

As always, there are so many things going on at once in my life. July and August (so far) are very much the same as the months before (hectic and crazy). But, I did manage to get things done. Maybe not as much as I wanted or planned, but hey… Some progress is still progress 😀

My Editing

I was able to sit down and edit. I didn’t reach my monthly goal of 50K (for July), but I got a nice amount done of 34K. I was happy I even got to do that, lol. Sadly August wasn’t a good start. Since the 1st of August, I only edited 4K.

I know… That’s just horrible. Listen to me, if you are like me and you love to write more freely and edit later – don’t! For the love of all that is human (lol), don’t! I learned this the hard way.

Room, Writing, Coffeen' Notes

I am more of a freestyle writer, all I want is to tell the story and give life to the characters and the world around them, while they adventure through many beautiful and painful moments.

Now… Editing all of this massive amount is hard (for me), but recently I’ve learned that if I write freely and then I take a day in the week where I only edit the stuff I’ve written before, it made the process move faster and better.

Now I know this may not work for all, but for me, it was a hard-learned lesson

floral

Online Things

Well, recently I had a few issues with my social media/blog/my newsletter.

My blog stopped sending me people’s posts to my email (since mid-June) and I’m trying to fix that, but I haven’t yet been successful. Also, my scheduling with WordPress has gone crazy (again). I really don’t know what to do with it 😦 Every time I schedule, it just won’t post at the right time and date that I say or it just posts in the date that I’ve written, lol.

Sailor Moon, Coffee n' Notes, Crying

So if you have any advice, I would love any help (any) 😀

My email (Gmail), decided to mix all my filters, making me do the only thing I could do… Delete all my filters (lol), yep! For me this was horrible.

My newsletter (wow), there are so many things going on there, with the new rules of free emails and such things, I haven’t yet done anything about it. I have been trying, though. What I was able to do (finally), is change my newsletter’s layout and I am happy with how it looks (it looks shiny and pretty, lol).

So don’t forget to sign up 😀

floral

Indoor things 😉

With all the house cleaning that I had to do these past few weeks and believe me when I say, I had tons of cleaning and organizing to do.

Minions, Cleaning, Coffee n' Notes

But as life happens, I did months of cleaning in a less than 2 days, lol with almost no sleep at all 😀 Saturday and Sunday, I’ve slept for most of these days. But now, the house is clean and looks amazing ❤

I still have some unfinished projects around the house that we must take care of, but for now… I am happy and not so stressed about the house chores. It was so fun to just sit and edit and while looked around the house to see it clean and just go back into my editing (I call this a success) 😀

Okay, we are done for now, lol. Before this post will get too long.

Random Ramblings

RandomRamblings

It’s Monday and for most, it’s the start of the week. Here Sunday is the first day but I still had the Monday’s Blues, lol.

I was very slow today but after I had a good large iced tea, I managed to pick myself up and start working 😉

With all that is going, plus planning a trip making me want to sleep the day away, but I can’t, lol. Too much to do. So after a good bag of Apple chips and refreshing iced tea, I started my day with 2 hours of editing.

floral

After I was done with the editing, I started to do some work around the house, just organized a few things, the dishes, made dinner and I still have some chores to finish before bedtime (life of an adult, lol) 😉

The editing is going slow, but I’m determined to edit every day (even if it’s only a little bit each day). It’s been a year and a half and I’ve written 3 books and only edited one (more like half a book, lol). My big goal this year, is to finish editing my most recent manuscript by the end of the year, including the professional edit 😉 I am putting a lot more focus on my editing and less of other but important things.

floral

Sadly Coffee n’ Notes is a little on the back burner (sorry about that). I miss blogging a lot (and I miss you guys even more), so I try to mostly blog about my random thoughts and some sort of weekly update 😉 Hope you’re okay with that ♡

Other than that, I’m trying to get even more organized with my time management and plan better, so keep an eye on my Instagram. I will be posting some pictures from my Bullet Journal Planner 😀

House ChoresGot to go and start doing some of my bedtime chores, lol (Yay me).

So You Want to Self Publish

Such a wonderful post about Self-Publish and a must read for anyone who thinks of going this road 🙂

...and then there was Sarah

being-a-good-writer.jpegI am often asked some variant of the question: “I’ve written a book. How do I self-publish it?” The question, as well as the answer, can feel overwhelming. Certainly whenever I’m asked, I often think, where do I start? What level of detail do I share? How much of my time can I give to assisting?

Time is unfortunately a commodity I have very little of nowadays, but I also love to help others, especially those serious about pursuing their creative endeavors. This article attempts to achieve that balance.

What This Is: The basics to get someone started in publishing, to get their feet wet. To literally get a book for sale and ready to market. Things you need to know before you publish, and the places you can go to do so.

What This Is Not: An all-inclusive guide to self-publishing. There’s no way I could cram 5+ years…
